These are all bits of travel advice well-meaning people have given me over the years. Unfortunately, it’s terrible advice. Just smile and nod, smile and nod…
1. “Pack for every type of weather and situation”
This may have made sense when bags were free and we didn’t have weather apps, but these days it just doesn’t make sense. Be prepared for what you plan to do and pack a few different layers. Stop there though; there just isn’t room for rain boots, rain coats and an umbrella on a beach vacation. Yes it may rain one day. You’ll survive.
2. “never eat somewhere you can eat at home”
This one may get me in trouble, but I love going to McDonald’s when I am in a new country. McDonald’s around the world are known for having localized menu items and it’s great insight into local culture and tastes. I wouldn’t go more than once though!
3. “Don’t travel there, no one speaks English”
“Maybe not.. but so what? Not only is that statement likely untrue for many countries, there is no harm in traveling somewhere unfamiliar. It is a great chance to learn bits of a new language and how to communicate in different ways. Learn some important words like “bathroom” and “wine” and be on your way.
4. “paying for extra leg room is a waste of money”
If you have long legs and a long flight, don’t hesitate to pay the upgrade fee. There is no reason to arrive at your destination stiff and irritable. Life is too short for that. To be sure you’re actually getting your money’s with, a little research can go a long way. Check out Seat Expert for detailed info and reviews on specific airline seats.
5. “all guide books are outdated”
Call me old fashioned but I love reading guide books when planning travel. That may sounds crazy coming from a travel blogger, I know! It’s an informative, unbiased way to learn what a place is about. I absolutely search on the internet and read blogs as well to find more in depth info and trendier options after getting a solid foundation of the basics.
6. “Don’t bother going if you can only stay for a day”
This advice is just so terrible. Go for a weekend, go for an afternoon if that is all you have. Life is so busy for us all these days, fit travel in when you can.
7. “Take as many pictures as possible”
It’s funny to call that bad advice especially for a blogger! The problem is taking it too far and spending so much time snapping you neglect to actually look at what is around you and take it in. Find a happy medium.
8. “Egypt isn’t going anywhere”
Between changing environments, terrorism and good old fashioned time.. those pyramids won’t be here forever. Don’t wait for “someday” to get here.
